Adam Johnson texted a 15-year-old schoolgirl saying it would 'deffo have to be dark' when they met up.

The footballer is giving evidence in his child sex trial. He admits grooming and kissing the girl but denies more serious sexual activity.

He was questioned this afternoon about messages he sent arranging a second meeting with the girl for a 'thank you kiss' for a signed football shirt he'd given her.

In one text, Johnson told the girl it would 'deffo have to be dark' when they met. Asked about the message, he replied: 'It's flirting and inappropriate.'

He told the court he sent the girl messages while he was 'bored' in a London hotel room ahead of Sunderland's away match at Tottenham in London.
He said: 'I'm ashamed I did that. I knew I should not be doing that. It was because I was in my hotel room - I was bored.'

Johnson also admitted sending messages to other women, who were in their 20s, around the time his girlfriend, gave birth in January last year.

Asked how the messages to other women compared with those to the girl, Johnson said: 'They were different. They were a lot more explicit.'

He told the jury: 'I wasn't being a good person to my girlfriend or my daughter. I was talking to people I shouldn't have.'
