The Villans have endured a nightmare season, with today’s loss their 24th of the season in the league, and their
ninth in a row.
Although Norwich City lost to Sunderland in the early kick off, Villa needed a win at Old Trafford to have any mathematical hope of surviving, but now sit 15 points behind the Canaries with just 12 left to play for.
Fans held up banners in protest of the running of the club under current owner Steve Lerner, with many feeling this relegation has been a long time coming after years of struggles at the wrong end of the table.
Tim Sherwood narrowly helped the team to survival last season, but he was sacked earlier this term after a poor run of form.
His successor Remi Garde arguably fared even worse, and was
recently dismissed with a long-term replacement still not found, despite links
to experienced names such as David Moyes.
One of the founding members of the Premier League and
ever-presents in the division since its rebranding in 1992, Villa’s relegation
ends 28 consecutive seasons in English football’s top flight.
